Extremely low water levels in Dutch rivers are making navigation difficult. In parts of the IJssel, Nederrijn and Waal, water depths have fallen so far that the authorities can no longer fully survey the shipping channel, NOS reported.
According to the water management department of the Netherlands’ infrastructure ministry, it is no longer possible to determine reliably whether ships can navigate safely along much of the IJssel, Nederrijn and Waal.
The agency said most survey vessels have too deep a draught to operate in the shallow water. Captains of inland waterway vessels must therefore now assess for themselves whether it is safe to navigate there.
