Armenian National Assembly Speaker Ruben Rubinyan issued a statement on 2 October announcing the establishment of an inquiry committee.
The statement was published on the National Assembly’s official Facebook page.
“Pursuant to Article 20, paragraph 1 and paragraph 5, point 2, of the Constitutional Law on the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, and at the request of at least one-quarter of the total number of MPs, a National Assembly inquiry committee has been established by operation of law to examine the crisis that has arisen within the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church as a result of the activities of a number of its clergy, and the resulting failure of the Church to fulfil its unique mission in the spiritual life of the Armenian people, the development of their national culture and the preservation of their national identity,” the statement said.
It added that, pursuant to Article 20, paragraph 6, of the Constitutional Law on the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, a draft National Assembly decision specifying the number of members of the inquiry committee would be considered at the National Assembly’s next regular sitting.
