Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister presents priorities of Armenia’s COP17 Presidency in Prague

Armenian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Robert Abisoghomonyan participated in and delivered a keynote address at a session entitled “The Role of Science in Diplomacy” as part of the concluding meeting of the 32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum, held in Prague.

The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade reported that in his remarks, the Deputy Minister presented the main priorities and vision of Armenia’s Presidency of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), addressing the complementary roles of science and diplomacy in tackling global environmental challenges.

Robert Abisoghomonyan emphasised the importance of scientific data and expert knowledge in policymaking and decision-making processes aimed at biodiversity conservation, noting that science can contribute both to a more in-depth assessment of existing and emerging risks and to their prediction and the development of effective responses.

Addressing preparations for COP17, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade highlighted the inclusive approach adopted by the Armenian Presidency, aimed at ensuring the full and meaningful participation of governments, international organisations, scientific and academic communities, civil society, youth, women, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, as well as the private sector.

Presenting the events planned as part of COP17, Robert Abisoghomonyan referred to the Leaders’ Summit entitled “Leaders for Nature”, which is expected to result in the adoption of the political declaration “Yerevan Call for Action”, reaffirming the key role of biodiversity in ensuring sustainable development, food security, climate resilience and well-being.

The Deputy Minister also emphasised the importance of the first Global Review of collective progress towards implementing the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. It was noted that the review will provide an opportunity to assess the progress achieved and identify existing gaps, as well as outline areas requiring greater efforts.

Robert Abisoghomonyan also addressed Armenia’s initiatives within the framework of COP17, aimed at expanding positive environmental incentives, promoting the exchange of experience on effective area-based conservation measures, developing biodiversity monitoring systems through new technologies, as well as strengthening international cooperation in the conservation of mountain and freshwater ecosystems.

In conclusion, the Armenian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade reaffirmed Armenia’s readiness to continue cooperating with OSCE participating States and international partners to ensure ambitious, forward-looking and practical outcomes at COP17 in Yerevan.
