The funeral of Norway’s long-reigning monarch, King Harald V, was held in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, on September 9. The King died on August 28 at the age of 89, according to Norwegian media.
Harald V was buried in the royal mausoleum near Akershus Fortress. The funeral service was conducted by Olav Fykse Tveit, Presiding Bishop of the Church of Norway.
The funeral was attended by members of the royal family, including the late King’s son and new monarch, King Haakon, as well as King Frederik X of Denmark, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, representatives of the royal families of the United Kingdom, Monaco and Bulgaria, members of Japan’s Imperial Family, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Governor General of Canada Louise Arbour, and other prominent political figures.
Harald V had reigned since 1991. He was Commander-in-Chief of the Norwegian Armed Forces and held the ranks of general in the army and admiral in the navy. In 2015, he became the first reigning monarch in the world to visit Antarctica.
