An urban biodiversity zone will be opened in Yerevan as part of the Seventeenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 17).
City officials said on Monday that the area will operate at the 2750th Anniversary Park of Yerevan just outside City Hall.
A number of environmental programs implemented by the Yerevan City Hall, as well as initiatives and programs being carried out in the areas of nature conservation, green infrastructure, biodiversity and sustainable urban development, will be presented there, Acting Head of the Environmental Protection Department of the Yerevan City Hall Sirarpi Haykazyan said.
“Two important programs of the Yerevan City Hall will be presented at the 2750th Anniversary Park, and there will be two pavilions dedicated to them: one will be dedicated to the Hrazdan Gorge, and the other to the Dalma Gardens. Yerevan residents and guests of Yerevan will be able to witness all the work carried out and biodiversity studies conducted in these areas, as well as our vision regarding further solutions related to these areas. The city biodiversity zone also provides an opportunity to present Yerevan’s environmental initiatives and projects to a wider public. In this area, we have planned thematic workshops and open discussions, screenings of environmental and festival films, concert and cultural programs, and professional and public dialogue on urban nature and its future,” Haykazyan said at a City Hall executive meeting.
She added that organizations implementing environmental initiatives and programs, as well as representatives of civil society, will be given the opportunity to hold various workshops and seminars on the platform.
“The main purpose of this platform is to show ordinary citizens what event is being held in Yerevan, what its purpose is, and what an important role it plays for Yerevan’s environmental programs and nature in general. This will be a space where it will be possible not only to talk about nature, but also to see, discuss and jointly shape a Yerevan where urban development and nature are in harmony. In the near future, both the schedule of events will be presented and more detailed information will be published,” the City Hall official said.
Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan also noted that within the framework of COP17, Yerevan expects approximately 15,000 guests from different countries.
Yerevan, Armenia will host the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP17) from October 19 to 30, 2026.
