US votes against UN resolution supporting Equal Earth projection

The United States was the only country to vote against a draft UN General Assembly resolution supporting the Equal Earth map projection, which more accurately represents the true size of Africa and other regions of the world, TASS reported.

A total of 164 countries voted in favour of adopting the document, while six others — Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Serbia, Lithuania and Estonia — abstained.

Ahead of the vote, the US representative to the UN called for the resolution to be rejected in its entirety, saying that Washington viewed the initiative not as a neutral attempt to correct cartographic distortions, but as part of a broader “ideological agenda”.

The US side also expressed the view that such resolutions divert the UN’s attention from issues of international peace, prosperity and interstate relations.
