According to data currently available in the Education Management Information System, around 415,000 students are enrolled in schools in Armenia. As of August 31, around 33,000 of them had been registered to attend first grade this year.
The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport said the registration process is still ongoing.
“The first bell has rung at around 1,390 schools operating in Armenia. The data on first-graders and students attending general education schools this academic year will be compiled after September 5,” the ministry said in a statement on September 1.
This academic year has been declared the Year of Reading in general education schools, with a number of initiatives planned throughout the year to encourage students to read.
The Year of Reading will launch on September 4 as part of the ninth International Book Festival.
Each month of the academic year will be dedicated to a particular literary genre or trend. The theme for September is the epic “Daredevils of Sassoun.”
