Education authorities report nearly 60% rise in admissions to international universities in Armenia

The number of students applying to and being admitted to interstate and international universities has increased significantly, by 59.9%, education authorities have said.

In 2022, 1,919 applicants were admitted to these universities, compared to 3,011 in 2026, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Zhanna Andreasyan said at a press conference.

She said that this means a larger share of children graduating from schools in Armenia are choosing to continue their education at interstate or international universities operating in Armenia.

“At the same time, the number of citizens leaving the country to study abroad has also increased. In this regard, we keep statistics only for male citizens because a deferment system is in place for citizens admitted to the top 50 universities. The number of these citizens has more than doubled. If in 2022 there were 131 citizens who received a deferment and left the country to study abroad, in 2026 we are already talking about 252 people,” she said.

According to the minister, 10,932 citizens were admitted to public and private universities through the unified examinations, through which admission to these universities is conducted, accounting for 49.23% of graduates.

“If we add to this the number of those admitted to universities abroad and to interstate and international universities, we see that 64.5% of our graduates are admitted to universities. In other words, around 15% continue their education at university through other means. We should also add distance-learning admissions, as well as students going from college to university, the figures for which are clarified in the first months of autumn,” she said.
