Organisation of Islamic Cooperation elects new Secretary-General

Former Mauritanian Foreign Minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed has been elected the new Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). According to Anadolu Agency, the decision was taken at an extraordinary meeting of OIC foreign ministers in Jeddah.

The 66-year-old Cheikh Ahmed will succeed Chadian diplomat Hissein Brahim Taha, who has served as Secretary-General since 2021.

The new Secretary-General served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen from 2015 to 2018.
