Italian Prime Minister sees need to begin negotiations on Ukraine

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reaffirmed Rome’s determination to work with international partners to advance the path towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine through negotiations, according to a statement issued by the Italian Prime Minister’s press office.

Meloni expressed support for negotiations on a settlement in Ukraine while taking part via videoconference in a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing being held in Kyiv.

“Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s determination to work with international partners to advance the path towards a just and lasting peace through negotiations. She also reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance ahead of the winter season, including the delivery of additional generators, in particular to support the resilience of the Ukrainian population and ensure the stability of the energy system,” the statement said.

The statement noted that during the summit, the leaders agreed on the need to strengthen the effectiveness of the sanctions regime and combat any attempts to circumvent it.

A meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a group of countries supporting Ukraine, is also scheduled to take place in Ukraine on August 24.
