Severe thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes and strong winds have been reported in several parts of Germany. Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse were the areas hardest hit by the storm. One woman was killed and several other people were injured, Euronews reported.
In Waldorf, in the Ahrweiler district, a 58-year-old woman tried to take shelter from the rain but was struck by a falling tree. She suffered fatal injuries. Several other people in Waldorf were taken to hospital with injuries.
In the Westerwald district, authorities had warned residents in advance of the risk of falling trees due to the storm. After the storm subsided, a scene of destruction emerged in Höhr-Grenzhausen, with roofs torn off, homes damaged and structures destroyed. Many residents said they had never seen anything like it before.
Although the storm lasted only a few minutes in many parts of Rhineland-Palatinate, power supplies were temporarily disrupted in 30 communities.
