Families displaced from Karabakh to receive partial compensation for rental costs

Families from certain groups displaced from Karabakh will receive partial compensation for housing rental costs.

Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs of Armenia Lusine Kocharyan said at a press conference that social assistance will be provided for a period of 10 years, with the monthly amount set at 40,000 drams per family member.

“We have indicated partial compensation. If they wish to live in Yerevan, where rental prices are high, it will turn out that only part of the amount is provided. However, our analysis shows that in regional settlements, it is possible to rent a house where the provided amount could fully cover the rent,” Lusine Kocharyan said.

The beneficiaries of the program are small families consisting of 2 or 3 people, families that include persons with disabilities, or families whose members are over the age of 60. In a family of two, the sum of their ages must be 115 or more; in a family of three, it must be 175 or more. A mandatory condition is that they must have Armenian citizenship.

“The program was developed taking into account the requests of our compatriots. There are families consisting only of persons with disabilities or only of elderly spouses. They do not wish to benefit from the housing certificate program because, in many cases, they find it difficult to search for and find housing and handle the purchase and sale process. They prefer to have rented housing or social housing, which is provided free of charge. Taking all of this into account, this program was developed,” Lusine Kocharyan said.

To benefit from the program, it is very important that they register on the waiting list for social housing. To do so, people need to visit the Unified Social Service and submit an application to be included on the waiting list. In addition, they must submit an application to waive the housing certificate. This refers to the certificate provided to people displaced from Karabakh for the purpose of purchasing housing. After submitting the application to waive the certificate, citizens can apply through the housing.socservice.am platform to benefit from the above-mentioned program.

Regarding social housing, Lusine Kocharyan noted that there are 200 apartments available, 12 of which are vacant. The government has undertaken the construction of social housing. Construction is already underway in Artashat and Vanadzor. There are also projects currently in the design stage.
