Syria strongly condemned Israeli air strikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airfield in Idlib province, describing them as an unjustified act of aggression and a blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Syrian news agency SANA reported, citing a statement from Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
“Syria notes that these Israeli attacks have continued since December 8, 2024. At a time when Syria is exercising restraint and working to strengthen stability and avoid escalation, the Israeli occupation’s attempts to undermine these efforts and drag the region into further tension and instability are once again being exposed,” the statement said.
The ministry also stressed that Syria holds Israel responsible for the escalation and called on the international community and the UN Security Council to unequivocally condemn the aggression and take a firm stance against Israel’s repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty.
“Syria will continue to defend its rights and national interests through legitimate means guaranteed by international laws and norms,” the statement said.
Earlier, Syrian media reported that the Abu al-Duhur military airfield in south-eastern Idlib province was targeted by four air strikes on the morning of August 18.
The US envoy for Syria said Israel was responsible for the attack on the airbase.
