A lawmaker representing the ruling Civil Contract party said on Tuesday that Armenia and Iran have a “mutual understanding” regarding the TRIPP connectivity project, which Yerevan is advancing with Washington.
MP Sargis Khandanyan said at a press briefing that strained U.S.-Iran relations cannot affect the implementation of the project.
“There is a mutual understanding between Armenia and Iran regarding TRIPP, and I do not think anyone should be concerned that the tense relations between Iran and the United States could affect the implementation of this program,” Khandanyan said.
According to him, Armenia’s interest is in establishing peace in the region as soon as possible.
“As for Iran-U.S. relations, of course, our interest is for peace to be established as soon as possible. We had high hopes for the negotiations and agreements that took place between Iran and the United States several months ago, and it seemed that a peace plan had been developed. Let us hope that this plan will be implemented,” Khandanyan said.
Speaking about the planned construction of a railway under TRIPP in the context of strained U.S.-Iran relations, Khandanyan emphasized that the railway project does not depend on relations between Washington and Tehran.
“The railway project is on the agenda. At present, the site and its feasibility are being studied, and once the studies and technical assessments are completed, construction will begin. I see no political obstacle here,” Khandanyan said.
