Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei on Friday approved a request from the Islamic Republic’s judiciary chief to pardon, reduce, or commute the sentences of more than 2,000 prisoners.

The pardon came ahead of Eid al-Ghadir, a significant religious holiday observed by Shia Muslims, state media reported, citing a statement from Khamenei’s office.

Iranian state media reported that individuals convicted of security-related offenses — including espionage and acts against Iran’s domestic or foreign security — are not eligible for pardon.
