The governor of the Turkish province of Iğdır, Fırat Taşolar, has inspected the renovation progress at the currently closed Alican border crossing checkpoint with Armenia.
Yeşil Iğdır newspaper reported that the governor, accompanied by a technical team, examined the infrastructure at the facility.
During the inspection, the governor emphasized that the work is expected to be completed in a short period of time, according to the newspaper.
It was noted that the reopening of the Alican border checkpoint would not only be a diplomatic step but also a significant boost for the regional economy.
According to the report, the activation of the border checkpoint is expected to revive cross-border trade by increasing commercial activity in Iğdır and neighboring provinces. It will also provide a logistical advantage by shortening transport routes through the Caucasus and enhance tourism mobility through reciprocal visits between the two countries, thereby promoting regional tourism, the newspaper highlighted.
As reported earlier, the crossing point on the Armenian side of the border with Türkiye, called the Margara checkpoint, has already been renovated by Armenia and is ready for operations.
Türkiye closed its land border with Armenia in the early 1990s.
The two countries have been engaged in normalization talks, and the opening of the land border is part of this process.
