U.S. tells citizens in Iran to leave ‘now,’ suggests land crossings to Armenia or Türkiye

The U.S. Virtual Embassy in Iran issued a security alert early Friday urging American citizens to “leave Iran now” and prepare departure plans that don’t rely on U.S. government assistance.

Americans are advised to consider departing Iran by land to Armenia or Türkiye.

The notice comes ahead of U.S. and Iran’s scheduled talks in Oman on Friday.

“Increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and internet blockages are ongoing. The Government of Iran continues to restrict access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks. Airlines continue to limit or cancel flights to and from Iran. U.S. citizens should expect continued internet outages, plan alternative means of communication, and, if safe to do so, consider departing Iran by land to Armenia or Türkiye,” the U.S. Virtual Embassy in Iran said in a statement.

The Armenian land border at Agarak/Norduz is open, it added.
