President Vahagn Khachaturyan has signed into law a bill designating January 27 as Memorial Day.
On January 20, Parliament adopted the bill at its second reading. The bill, co-authored by Vice Speaker Ruben Rubinyan of the Civil Contract party and independent MP Gegham Nazaryan, establishes January 27 as a public holiday honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for Armenia.
The co-authors of the bill previously explained that while various other memorial days commemorate specific historical events, it would be preferable to have a single Memorial Day honoring all men and women of the military who fell in the line of duty for the country.
The co-authors said they chose the date for symbolic reasons, as the following day, January 28, is observed annually as Army Day.
