Armenpress marks 107th anniversary

5 minute read

The Armenpress State News Agency is marking the 107th anniversary of its founding.

Over more than a century, Armenpress has developed into a multilingual, international news institution, building extensive news databases and visual archives, a stable and intellectually engaged readership, and a broad network of domestic and international partners. The Agency combines long-standing traditions with ongoing innovation, supported by a professional staff who regard themselves as part of a unified Armenpress media community.

Operating in an increasingly complex media environment, Armenpress emphasizes accuracy, editorial restraint, and public responsibility. The Agency does not prioritize speed when it risks compromising factual precision and avoids sensationalism when careful wording better serves the public interest. Its stated priority remains helping audiences not only to receive information, but also to understand it.

In recent years, Armenpress has focused its editorial policy on trust management, including a clear separation of fact from commentary, balanced coverage of sensitive topics, openness to correcting errors, and rejection of information manipulation. Resisting pressure for premature reporting is often necessary when information remains incomplete.

Beyond its role as a news provider, Armenpress positions itself as a carrier of institutional memory. Its archives document political decisions, social developments, and cultural events that continue to serve as reference material for researchers, historians, and journalists.

For a small state, media sovereignty remains a key consideration. Armenpress describes its mission as acting as a bridge between Armenia and the international media space, working with foreign partners to ensure accurate, contextual reporting on the country, particularly during periods of crisis marked by fast-moving and contradictory information flows.

While digital technologies increasingly shape journalistic production, the Agency emphasizes the continued importance of human judgment. Technology serves as a tool to improve efficiency, while editorial decision-making remains a human responsibility.

Founded on December 18, 1918, by decision of the Armenian National Council, the Telegraph Agency of Armenia - later known as Hayheragortz, Armenta, and eventually Armenpress - issued its first official bulletin on January 15, 1919. Throughout its history, the Agency has remained committed to its core mission despite changes in name and format.

Today, Armenpress publishes news in ten languages: Armenian, English, Russian, Arabic, French, Turkish, Spanish, Georgian, Persian, and Chinese. Its output includes text, photography, video content, and audio podcasts, alongside press conferences and live broadcasts.

In 2025, Armenpress expanded its international partnership network, signing news exchange agreements with agencies including Moldova’s Moldpres, Poland’s PAP, Kazakhstan’s Khabar, China Central Television (CCTV) and CCTV+, and renewing its cooperation agreement with China’s Xinhua News Agency. Armenpress is also a member of the Global South Media Partners platform and currently maintains exchange agreements with 41 media organizations worldwide.

The Agency maintains an active presence across major social media platforms, including Facebook, X, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Telegram. According to Google Analytics, its website recorded 3.5 million active users over the past 11 months, a 9.7 percent increase year-on-year, while total page views exceeded 18 million.

Armenpress views the anniversary not as a conclusion, but as a starting point for further development, reaffirming its commitment to accuracy, public service, and historical record.

Beyond texts and figures stand people - dedicated, tireless, proud, driven, and professional. Today is a celebration of each and every one of them.

Armenpress is 107 years old, and its story is only just beginning.
