Armenia–Azerbaijan peace agreement opens broad cooperation opportunities for EU: Merz

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the peace agreement initialed between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington on August 8 opens up broad opportunities for cooperation for the European Union as well. He made the remarks during a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
"We are closely following developments in the South Caucasus, particularly the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The peace agreement initialed between Armenia and Azerbaijan opens up broad opportunities for cooperation for the European Union as well," Merz said.
He also emphasized that Germany welcomes Armenia's intention to deepen relations with the European Union.
"We are aware that many prerequisites and criteria must be met in order to become a member of the European Union. Whether that happens through an association agreement or not is up to the respective country.
We want to gradually intensify our relations with Armenia, and this is clearly stated in the declaration we jointly adopted. This is the right path and a historic opportunity for Armenia," the German Chancellor noted.
