Armenia to start construction of five new water reservoirs next year

Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Davit Khudatyan presented the main directions for the development of water infrastructure in the coming year, emphasizing that construction work on several new reservoirs will soon begin.

“It is planned to continue the construction of the Kaps Reservoir, with a budget of 7.7 billion drams. In addition, 3.7 billion drams is allocated to improve the capacity of irrigation systems,” the minister said at a joint committee meeting in parliament on the 2026 budget bill.

According to Khudatyan, for the effective management of the water sector, the government plans to allocate 7 billion AMD for the subsidization of water systems and 1.3 billion AMD for the co-financing of water resources.

“We have allocated 1 billion drams for the construction of reservoirs. At this stage, construction work will begin on five new reservoirs, which have been approved by the Public Investment Committee. These include the Kasakh, Yelpin, Lichk, Artik, and Astghadzor reservoirs,” the minister stated.

In addition to new projects, the ministry also plans to modernize existing reservoirs and carry out major repairs of water systems. “264.3 million drams is allocated for the modernization of reservoirs, and 500 million drams for the renovation of irrigation systems. For the cleaning and reinforcement of rivers and flood channels, including the cleaning of the Gavaraget channel in the Gavar community, 423.7 million drams has been allocated,” the minister said.
