Armenia plans to regain control over its sovereign territories held by Azerbaijan through delimitation process, FM says

Armenia does not plan to militarily return parts of its sovereign territories currently occupied by Azerbaijan, FM Ararat Mirzoyan said on Monday.

He said the matter will be resolved diplomatically during the ongoing delimitation process.

"As a result of military actions, around 200 square kilometers of our sovereign territory are currently under Azerbaijan's control. It is also no secret that there are areas, recognized on paper and according to international borders as belonging to Azerbaijan, that are now under the control of our armed forces. We have an understanding, an agreement, and we have spoken about it, stating that the process of returning these territories to their legitimate owners should take place as a result of the ongoing process of border delimitation and demarcation," Mirzoyan told lawmakers at a joint parliamentary committee hearing on the 2026 budget bill.

Armenia and Azerbaijan successfully completed demarcating some parts of their border in 2024 and the process is set to continue.
