Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan delivered the opening remarks at an online meeting marking the launch of negotiations on the “123 Agreement” between the Government of Armenia and the Government of the United States of America, concerning cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, the foreign ministry said in a press release.

Opening remarks were also delivered by Gonzalo Suarez, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nonproliferation Policy at the Bureau of Arms Control and Nonproliferation, U.S. Department of State, as well as Ambassador of Armenia to the United States Narek Mkrtchyan and Ambassador of the United States to Armenia Kristina Kvien.

In his remarks, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia reiterated that the safe and secure use of nuclear energy for peaceful uses remains a priority for Armenia and emphasized the continued commitment of Armenia to the principles of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.

The parties commended that following the signing of the Memoranda of Understandings between the Governments of Armenia and the US in Washington on August 8, practical steps are now being taken towards its implementation.

The conclusion of the “123 Agreement” will establish a legal framework for the exchange of nuclear technologies, data, and knowledge for peaceful uses with highest standards of non-proliferation, the Armenian foreign ministry said.
