Yerevan mayor vows to 'clean the city' of unauthorized construction

Mayor of Yerevan Tigran Avinyan vowed on Monday to continue demolishing illegal buildings and constructions in an effort to “clean the city.”
He said there have been some procedural changes in authorizing demolitions.
“In all cases where we receive an application to legalize buildings [unlawfully] constructed on municipal land and it gets denied, we issue a demolition order accordingly. That’s the effective path toward cleaning the city of illegal buildings, step by step,” he said, noting that in some cases, the municipality may approve legalization.
“For example, we have districts where buildings were developed some fifteen years ago, with all construction norms maintained. There’s no sense in bringing them down. The [owner] has to make the new cadastre payment to legalize it,” Avinyan said.
