EU calls on Armenia, Azerbaijan to sign peace agreement

The EU Foreign Affairs Council, on April 14 in Luxembourg, exchanged views about the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process and current developments.

In response to a query by Armenpress Brussels correspondent, the lead spokesperson of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Anitta Hipper said that the EU welcomed the statements made by Armenia and Azerbaijan about the completion of the talks around the draft Agreement on Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations.

“These statements mark a significant step in the direction of establishing lasting peace and security in the region. It is highly important to maintain the current positive dynamics and ensure the successful completion of the process in the same forward-looking spirit and readiness to compromise by the two parties,” Hipper said, adding that the EU encourages the sides to move forward and sign the peace agreement.

Armenia has numerously expressed readiness to sign the peace agreement as soon as possible and offered Azerbaijan to start talks on choosing a venue and date, but Baku has been stalling the process.
