Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Geadis Geadi, commenting on the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, welcomed efforts aimed at achieving peace, stressing that such attempts are commendable if they take into account geopolitical realities.
In an interview with Armenpress Brussels correspondent, the MEP emphasized that Europe must protect the interests of Armenia and the Armenian people.
“Europe can certainly play a decisive role and, in my opinion, has a duty to protect the interests of Armenia and the Armenian people. It must intervene decisively to put an end to the ambitions of states that covet Armenia’s historical territories,” Geadi said, expressing regret that Europe applies double standards, as seen in the case of his native Cyprus.
Armenia and Azerbaijan announced on March 13 that they had reached an agreement on the text of a peace treaty. Immediately after the announcement, Armenia proposed to Azerbaijan to begin consultations to determine the date and venue for signing the agreement. However, Azerbaijan has introduced new preconditions.
Baku continues to falsely claim that the Armenian Constitution contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan, insisting that Armenia amend its Constitution as a prerequisite. Moreover, Azerbaijan demands the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group before signing the peace agreement.
