Armenian, Iranian legislators reaffirm importance of economic cooperation

Vice Speaker of Parliament Hakob Arshakyan, within the framework of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Uzbekistan, had a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hamid-Reza Haji Babaee on Wednesday.

The sides underscored the importance of multilateral relations between Armenia and Iran, the parliament’s press service said in a readout.

During the meeting Hakob Arshakyan noted that Armenia highly values the relations with Iran based on mutual respect and trust. He underlined that in difficult geopolitical conditions, it is extremely important for Armenia to have reliable friends; cooperation between the two countries plays a key role in maintaining regional stability.

Hakob Arshakyan spoke about the latest diplomatic mutual visits, including the visit of Iran-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Foreign Minister of Iran to Armenia as a reflection of growing political and diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The interlocutors reaffirmed the importance of active cooperation in economic sectors such as infrastructure, energy and trade, the strategic position of Armenia as a transit route to Europe and the North, as well as the vital links of Iran with the Persian Gulf, India and East Asia. Key factors that promote further cooperation within the framework of the North-South Transport Corridor, which is of strategic importance to both countries, were noted.

Arshakyan reaffirmed the commitment of Armenia in achieving lasting peace in the region.

In this context Hakob Arshakyan expressed his gratitude to Iran for permanently supporting the territorial integrity of Armenia and the inviolability of its borders.

“We have good relations with Armenia, and we are ready to continue the interaction and cooperation. We stand by the rights of our friends,” Hamid-Reza Haji Babaee said.

Hakob Arshakyan expressed hope that the negotiations on all the issues will successfully proceed and the problems will be peacefully resolved.
