An average of 1 person dies every day in Armenia in traffic-related accidents annually, a senior lawmaker said on Wednesday.
Andranik Kocharyan, the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security Affairs, said that the statistics of road accidents in Armenia remains “concerning”.
He made the remarks at parliamentary hearings about traffic safety in Armenia convened with the purpose of proposing systemic solutions to the problems.
“The statistics in Armenia continues to be concerning. Annually, an average of one person dies while 16 others sustain injuries in traffic accidents every day,” Kocharyan said, expressing regret that the infrastructure and traffic management improvement actions have been insufficient to prevent such incidents. “We haven’t yet succeeded to maximally neutralize the negative consequences,” he said.
The causes of the road accidents, according to the legislator, encompass both flaws in management and infrastructures, as well as insufficient skills and lack of responsibility of motorists.
Kocharyan called for introducing traffic safety education in public education, as well as increasing the proper conduct of motorists to prevent accidents.
MP Armen Khachatryan, Kocharyan’s deputy in the committee, said that 333 people died and 6116 others were injured in a total of 4314 traffic accidents in 2024.
“And in the three months of 2025 alone, from January to March, we’ve had 988 accidents with 60 fatalities and 1391 injuries,” Khachatryan said.
But he also said that the procedures for obtaining driver’s license have been improved, minimizing corruption risks.
