Iran ready to help Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty signing, says ambassador

Iran hopes Armenia and Azerbaijan will display restraint in the path towards the signing of the peace agreement, Iranian ambassador Mehdi Sobhani has said.

“We hope that the two parties will be able to pass the way that will lead to the signing of the peace agreement through restraint. I think our region will not withstand any tension. We hope all parties will maintain these principles aimed at peace and calm,” he told reporters.

The ambassador said Iran maintains contact with Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“During our conversations and discussions, we call on the parties to advance in the direction of signing the peace agreement. Iran is ready to help preserve peace, in order for the ceasefire not to be breached, and the parties be able to reach the signing of the peace agreement. And I think in this regard the 3+3 is a good format. By using this format we can advance towards establishment of peace,” the Iranian ambassador said.

Speaking about reports that Azerbaijan has been purchasing armaments from Israel in large quantities, the Iranian ambassador said Tehran opposes the militarization of the region.

“We have good relations with Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan is our neighbor, we use the ties we have with Azerbaijan, we are doing everything for peace to be established in the region. In any case we are closely following regional developments,” he said.
