No peace treaty can immediately reconcile countries and peoples - FM

1 minute read

The concluded text of the draft peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan envisages mechanisms for both countries to continue discussions about normalization of ties, Armenian FM Ararat Mirzoyan has said.

“In general, we know from history that no peace treaty can give answers to all possible questions at once, or immediately reconcile two countries or peoples with a magic wand…Of course, there can be multiple issues, including sensitive and highly sensitive issues that must be discussed and resolved later. And our agreed-upon text of the peace agreement, which is ready for signing, is no exception,” Mirzoyan told lawmakers on Friday.

“The agreement envisages mechanisms through which we can continue discussions towards normalization of relations,” he added.

The governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan announced on March 13 that the negotiations around the peace treaty have been successfully concluded. The date and location of signing the agreement is yet to be determined.
