YEREVAN, JANUARY 8, ARMENPRESS. EU spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, Anitta Hipper stated that the European Union calls for respecting the sovereignty of its member states. This follows a statement by US President-elect Donald Trump about purchasing Greenland.

At a press conference on Wednesday, January 8, she stated that she would not delve into specific remarks but emphasized that the sovereignty of EU countries must be respected.

The spokesperson noted that as a matter of principle, the sovereignty of states must be respected.

“This is one of our diplomatic values and a key principle we uphold. This applies to Denmark as well,” she said.

The topic was also addressed by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who stated in an interview with France Inter radio that the EU will defend its borders.

"There is no question of the EU letting other nations in the world, whoever they may be, attack its sovereign borders.”

Barrot added that, while he did not believe the US “would invade” Greenland, “we have entered an era that is seeing the return of the law of the strongest”.
