New manager of Armenia to be named in January, says football federation chief

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 18, ARMENPRESS. Football officials will reveal the new manager of the Armenian national team in January 2025.

Armen Melikbekyan, the president of the Football Federation of Armenia, said that they are now negotiating with several “prominent persons and organizations.”

“We want to invite not only a coach of the national team, but also make global changes in Armenian football pertaining to the coaching staff and the academies of the national team. It will be aimed at refreshing the Armenian football,” Melikbekyan said during the 25th general assembly of the federation. He said the federation will present the new coach in January of 2025.

Armenia manager Alexander Petrakov was fired shortly after the Armenia vs. North Macedonia match earlier in 2024 when Armenia lost 0:2.

Melikbekyan also expressed hope that Armenia will be granted the right to host the 2029 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He said hosting the event would further encourage the development of football.

4 academies and 3 stadiums will be built for the event.

Earlier in June, it was reported that Armenia and Georgia would present a joint bid to co-host the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2029. FIFA has endorsed the joint bid.
