COP29. Italian parliamentarians call for release of Armenian captives

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 8, ARMENPRESS. On the eve of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29 to be held in Baku, 39 Italian parliamentarians have signed a statement urging Azerbaijan to immediately release Armenian prisoners of war (POWs).

According to ANSA agency, the statement reads:

-Considering that from November 11 to 22, 2024, Azerbaijan will host the UN Climate Change Conference COP29;

-Considering that Italy maintains strong commercial and political relations with Baku, as well as significant cooperation in the energy sector, placing Italy among Azerbaijan's primary European partners;

-Recognizing that Italy has an interest in promoting stability and peace in the South Caucasus region, and thus supports all efforts aimed at building trust between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including the signing of a final peace agreement;

-Noting that, following recent conflicts, 23 Armenian prisoners of war and other detainees remain held in Baku, with families waiting for their return;

-Considering that their release would positively influence bilateral relations and the region at large, as well as the COP29 conference;
The deputies and senators of the Italian Republic, who have signed the statement, call on the government:

-To encourage Azerbaijan to release all Armenian prisoners of war and other detainees as an act of goodwill and a gesture of friendship with Italy in connection with the COP29 event;

-To ensure their return home, also with own funds, if necessary;

-To convey Italy’s commitment to supporting lasting peace in the region to both Armenia and Azerbaijan.
