Government approves Strategy for Improving the Demographic Situation

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 17, ARMENPRESS. The Cabinet approved on Thursday the 2024-2040 Strategy for Improving the Demographic Situation.

Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Narek Mkrtchyan presented the goals of the strategy at the Cabinet meeting.

He said the strategy is composed of 4 goals.

“First is the creation of an environment of welfare for the family, where families are more flexible in the matter of making a decision to have a baby. Second is the prevention of premature deaths. In this context all our international experts and various groups working on the strategy have highlighted the introduction of the healthcare insurance system and achieving this goal through it. The societies are aging, and we are facing this challenge too, thus, we decided that the next strategic goal must be the implementation of active programs, which will allow seniors to create more value in the economy and live longer. The third goal is the policy of managing migration, by reducing the factors of migration, and on the other hand creating the kind of environment in Armenia that will lead to foreigners from various countries making a decision to move to Armenia and live here. The fourth strategic goal is the use of the diaspora’s capital,” the minister said.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan highlighted that welfare includes healthcare, communal services, transportation, and other aspects of life. “It is impossible to imagine welfare without education,” he said.

The PM said that the reasons of migration aren’t studied sufficiently enough.

“Justice is an integral part of demography,” he added.

He said that the fundamental question in demography is whether or not the person living in Armenia sees a future here. “If the person, on the socio-psychological level, doesn’t see a future, then whatever strategy we adopt, as much money we spend, nothing will change. People must fundamentally see that there is a future here, that their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren can live, work and study here,” Pashinyan said.
