Armenian Nuclear Power Plant halted due to lighting strike

YEREVAN, AUGUST 31, ARMENPRESS. A lightning strike on Friday evening caused a temporary halt of Armenia’s Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures said, lauding the facility’s modernized safety systems.

The plant was cut off from the power grid in an emergency mode around 21:55, August 30 due to a lighting strike, as a result of which the safety systems brought the plant to a safe halt, the ministry said.

The safety systems are highly sensitive and react to any situation.

The plant’s personnel are now working to restart the plant.

“This is yet another proof that the large-scale modernization work carried out in the past years, including the work on the safety systems, have been effective and gave the expected result,” the ministry said.
