Iran reiterates objection to any extraterritorial corridor through Armenia

YEREVAN, JULY 30, ARMENPRESS. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has reiterated that Tehran is opposed to the so-called Zangezur Corridor, Mehr news agency reports.

Khamenei made the statement during a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is in Tehran for the inauguration of the new Iranian president.

Khamenei said that Iran still considers the so-called Zangezur Corridor to be detrimental to Armenia.

“We deeply believe in developing relations with Armenia. The cooperation between the two countries will continue based on interests and regardless of the policy of others. Foreigners must not create obstructions for countries’ relations with their neighbors,” Khamenei said.

He emphasized the importance of the preservation of Armenia’s territorial integrity, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the Zangezur Corridor to be detrimental for Armenia, and we maintain this position.”

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia has numerously announced that it does not accept any extraterritorial corridor in its territory. He also described the Armenian-Iranian ties as strategic.
