Washington intends to support Armenia with enhancing its security sector governance - U.S. Embassy in Armenia

YEREVAN, JULY 23, ARMENPRESS. By appointing a representative of the U.S. Army to the Armenian Ministry of Defense, Washington intends to support Armenia with enhancing its security sector governance while strengthening U.S.-Armenia relations.

The U.S. Embassy in Armenia reported this in response to a request from Armenpress, clarifying that the selection of a civilian adviser has already been made, and he will begin work this year.

“The United State’s Department of State’s Global Defense Reform Program (GDRP) supports partners globally to develop more resilient, effective, and accountable security institutions through strategic-level advisory assistance,” the embassy noted, citing a statement by U.S. Under Secretary of State Uzra Zeya a few days ago that a representative of the U.S. Army will work in the Ministry of Defense of Armenia.

When asked what functions will be assigned to the representative of the U.S. Army in the Armenian Ministry of Defense, the embassy answered:

“The civilian advisor is not funded by the U.S. Army or the Department of Defense, but rather through the Department of State, and is intended to support Armenia to strengthen its defense institutions. The advisor will be based in Armenia and engage regularly with the Embassy and Ministry.”

The embassy also added that through advisory assistance, the United States intends to support Armenia with enhancing its security sector governance while strengthening U.S.-Armenia relations.

“The civilian advisor has been identified and will begin working later this year,” the U.S. Embassy in Armenia concluded.
