Biden drops out of presidential race and endorses Harris

YEREVAN, JULY 22, ARMENPRESS. U.S. President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him, CNN reports.

Harris said she’s “honored” to receive Biden’s endorsement and vowed to “earn and win” the nomination. Despite Biden’s backing, it remains unclear whether Harris will become the nominee, or what process the party will take to select an alternative, the report adds. It will be decided at the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

If nominated, Harris could be the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead the ticket of a major political party. Roughly 4,700 total delegates will decide the Democratic nominee at the Democratic National Convention to be held in August in Chicago.

In a phone call with CNN minutes after Biden announced his exit from the 2024 race, former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump described Biden as going “down as the single worst president by far in the history of our country.” Trump also told CNN that he thinks Harris will be easier to defeat than Biden would have been.

Biden announced his decision to end his reelection campaign in a letter posted on the social network X on July 21. The U.S. President said he will finish his term and will address the nation later this week.
