BTA. President Radev Remembers Adoption of 1991 Constitution, Outlines Needed Changes

YEREVAN, JULY 12, ARMENPRESS/BTA. In a message on the occasion of the32nd anniversary of the adoption of the current Constitutionon July 12, 1991, President Rumen Radev said that revising it "is a task of the highest responsibility in the continued construction of democratic Bulgaria", said his Press Secretariat. He outlined changes that he sees as needed: easier access to constitutional justice, stronger judicial independence, effective direct democracy and local self-government.

The President urged those who now seek to be involved in the process of revising the Constitution, to remember the aspiration of the members of the 7th Grand National Assembly, which wrote the Constitution, to express the will of the Bulgarian people for building a democratic and social country with a rule of law, and their belief in the values of freedom, peace, humanity, equality, justice and tolerance.

"The processes related to the work of the 7th Grand National Assembly more than three decades ago are particularly relevant today, when changes to the country's basic law are being discussed again," the President further said.

"On the agenda of society now is facilitating access to constitutional justice, creating additional guarantees for an independent judiciary and ensuring effective direct democracy and local self-government," he added.

The 1991 Constitution was the first new constitution in the former socialist bloc. Its adoption came amid hunger strikes, political tensions and a demand for a referendum in which the people would vote for or against the new basic law.
