Possible peace treaty won’t mention size of territories of Armenia and Azerbaijan - FM

YEREVAN, MAY 5, ARMENPRESS. The sizes of the territories of Armenia and Azerbaijan will not be mentioned in the possible treaty on establishing relations, foreign minister Ararat Mirzoyan has said.

He said that the statements on recognition of the 29,800 square kilometers and 86,600 square kilometers of territories of Armenia and Azerbaijan respectively are political statements to confirm that the countries do not have territorial claims against one another.

Mirzoyan was asked in parliament by MP Gegham Manukyan whether or not Armenia has recognized the territorial integrity of any given country by its size while establishing diplomatic relations.

FM Mirzoyan said treaties on mutual recognition do not mention the size of the territory.

“Mentioning the territorial integrities by size are political statements. These statements are about Armenia not having territorial demands from Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan not having territorial demands from Armenia. I don’t believe that you think that we should include or see this with mentioning such an area in the future treaty on establishing relations or any other document. The difference is obvious,” FM Mirzoyan said.
