YEREVAN, JANUARY 31, ARMENPRESS. A captain of the Armenian Armed Forces is facing high treason charges for supplying foreign intelligence agencies classified information on Armenia’s military, the National Security Service (NSS) said in a statement.

The suspect was recruited and worked for the foreign intelligence agencies since early 2021, the NSS said.

He was paid by the foreign intelligence agencies to gather and provide “classified state and service information on the military sector” for the use against Armenia’s sovereignty, territorial inviolability and foreign security.

The captain provided the foreign intelligence agency with information on the arsenal, types and quantity of weaponry in his military base, information on the deployment location of the combat outpost and other data, by taking photos of the weapons and conveying the information. The captain also provided the foreign intelligence agency with information about the armaments acquired from India, the NSS said. The foreign intelligence agency gave the suspect money and a mobile phone on two occasions for the information.

The officer is indicted on charges of high treason and is remanded into pre-trial detention pursuant to a court order.
