YEREVAN, JANUARY 11, ARMENPRESS. Inspired by the activeness displayed by women who participated in combat shooting exercises the Defense Ministry came up with an idea to launch a new voluntary military service option for women, the Deputy Minister of Defense Arman Sargsyan told reporters.

“At this moment a bill is under discussion and it will be put into circulation when it’s ready. I can now only say that it will take place on a voluntary basis,” he said.

Sargsyan added that the objective is to use the potential of the women who have the desire and possibility to contribute to increasing the combat-readiness of the military.

By law, a 24-months military service is mandatory for men aged 18-27.

Voluntary service options for women do exist.

The Defense Ministry hasn’t yet elaborated on the new specificities and differences of the new option currently under discussion.
