Armenian military considers new service option for women

YEREVAN, JANUARY 7, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian Ministry of Defense is considering enabling women to enlist into military service through voluntary conscription for a fixed term.

“I can’t provide any other additional information at this moment, I can only confirm that we are discussing the issue of enabling women with the opportunity to voluntaritly enslit into conscription [fixed-term] military service,” Defense Ministry spokesperson Aram Torosyan told ARMENPRESS when asked to comment on media reports.

By law, a 24-months military service is mandatory for men aged 18-27.

Voluntary service options for women do exist.

The Defense Ministry spokesperson did not elaborate on the new specificities of the options currently under discussion.
