YEREVAN, OCTOBER 5, ARMENPRESS. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the importance of healthcare systems all over the world. So, we need to use this opportunity and improve the situation in order to be prepared for the future challenges, MichaelRyan, executive director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Programme, said during a press conference in Yerevan.

He stated that billions of dollars are invested in financial, economic security, but almost nothing is invested in healthcare security.

MichaelRyan also said that emergency situations are happening all over the world quite often especially in the past years, but according to him, the biggest problem is that people forget as human psychology is that he/she wants to quickly forget about any trauma, but if they forget about that trauma before learning lessons, they will constantly face it. People, who do not learn lessons from history, are doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

“We firstly need to understand what our priorities are, because, frankly speaking, we can spend a lot of money both on trainings and different kinds of research, which are also very important, but if we do not fundamentally change the level of our investments and do not have a political will to implement investments, we will again face problems. And now, several countries, including Armenia, have started to negotiate around a new agreement on how to respond to emergency situations at a global level. And we are consistent and will continue the work with the Armenian healthcare system and a number of other countries in order to deliver the global talks to the end in two years”, MichaelRyan said.
