Armenian soldier killed by friendly fire in outpost – investigators say

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 1, ARMENPRESS. Investigators say the death of an Armenian serviceman on September 30 at a military outpost was caused by friendly fire.

A soldier misidentified one of his comrades as an enemy target and opened fire with his service rifle.

The Investigative Committee said they were looking into possible rules of engagement violations committed by the suspected shooter, and a criminal case on breaching the rules of active-duty service is launched. The suspect is under arrest and faces 6 to 12 years imprisonment if found guilty.

Investigators said the incident happened around 23:40, September 30. The suspect heard sounds of footsteps in the outpost and mistook the victim as hostile.
