MP rules out possibility of single-party system after constitutional reforms
YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 26, ARMENPRESS. Armenian National Assembly’s “Republican” faction MP Samvel Nikoyan does not agree with the view that constitutional reforms aim to form one-party system in the country. On November 26, during the interview with journalists he mentioned that proposed reforms create inner democratic mechanisms which will exclude the possibility of formation of single-party system in the state. “If the reforms are adopted, political party, receiving majority votes, can form a coalition with other political forces after the first round of the elections and can form a government where there will not be a need for passing second round of elections. At the same time, the political force, which will rank the 2nd, can form with other political forces and create a government. Here is the inner democratic element which gives a wide opportunity to the political sector but the constitution cannot do the same,” Nikoyan emphasized, as “Armenpress” reports.
He reminded the last presidential elections in Armenia in the result of which Raffi Hovannisian, Heritage Party chairman got rather big number of votes. “If we had not semi-presidential but parliamentary system then Heritage faction could become the second political force by those votes,” Nikoyan said.
Referendum on constitutional reforms will held on December 6 in Armenia.
