Vaghinak Shushanyan is in favor of majoritarian voting system

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 24, ARMENPRESS. Despite the fact that for decades opposition forces in Armenia have announced about the necessity to abolish majoritarian voting system and replace it by 100% proportional one, civil activist representing “No” camp Vaghinak Shushanyan is in favor of majoritarian voting system. In a meeting with the people of Verin Artashat village of Ararat Province said that by abolishing majoritarian voting system many literate and experienced people will be deprived of the right to enter the National Assembly and raise the voice of those people who trusted them in the parliament.

“Proportional voting system, where individual people have no ability to put their candidacy, is proposed for forming the National Assembly. From now on, they have to be included in party lists. This means that a non-partisan person with much experience, knowledge and huge capabilities to make reforms and improvements in their communities, now they will be deprived of that capabilities”, Shushanyan said.

Member of the Specialized Commission for the Constitutional Reforms Hrayr Tovmasyan, giving a speech after Shushanyan, brought the example of different states that elect their parliaments via proportional elections. Russia, Israel, Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and Switzerland are among those states. “Politics is a team-game, and if we are playing a team-game, football, one cannot do it only on his own. He must be included in some kind of a team. This team is called “party” in politics”, Tovmasyan said.

He also noted that today’s opposition forces often “shout or offend the authorities”. According to him, this is explained by the fact that the opposition has no levers to act, but the draft Constitutional reforms give the opposition a real capability to participate in different political procedures.

16 politicians for and against the Constitutional Reforms will visit different places in Armenia – from north to south – for 20 days starting from November 13 to advocate their ideas. The campaign is available live on “Armnews” and “A1+” in the framework of the joint TV show. “Armenpress” regularly releases interesting photo stories of the show. The Constitutional Reforms referendum will be held on December 6, 2015.
