GYUMRI, OCTOBER 16, ARMENPRESS. Gyumri Mayor suggests his project, “Gyumri without huts”, aimed to rid Gyumri of huts. 27 years have passed since the 1988 catastrophic earthquake. During this period a number of projects were implemented, but those were not enough to rid the city from huts. There are still 3270 huts in the city, 2500 out of which are inhabited.

To solve this key problem, Gyumri Mayor suggests all institutions to consolidate. “It is clear that the city budget is not enough to solve this problem as 40-50 million USD is required to allocate apartments to all those living in huts. But it is also obvious that we have no right to wait”. Samvel Balasanyan applies to everyone in Armenia and Diaspora to solve the problem, suggesting to creat a foundation which will operate transparently.

Fund raising will be conducted by the initiative of the Mayor.  “I will be the first make a contribution to the foundation. I will grant an apartment to a large family living in a hut”, Samvel Balasanyan mentioned, announcing that he will not get his salary as a city Mayor as long as there is at least one family living in a hut.
