on July 23

BRUSSELS, JULY 22, ARMENPRESS. The plenary session of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, during which the resolution on the Armenian Genocide was being discussed, is over. As “Armenpress” reports, citing the official website of the Chamber of Representatives, voting of the resolution will take place on July 23.

Before the end of the discussion MP Dirk Van der Maelen representing the Socialist party gave a speech where he mentioned that the Belgian Chamber of Representatives must clearly express the necessary term and call the events of 1915 a genocide.

MP Marco Van Hees from the Workers' Party of Belgium emphasized that adopting the resolution on the Armenian Genocide Belgium will win the public's trust. “Left-wing Turkish  Revolutionary Socialist Workers' Party (DSIP) will also recognize the Armenian Genocide. I think it is the only way to go forward”, said Van Hees.

None of the MPs that gave a speech during the session denied the fact of the Armenian Genocide and introduced the position of their parties.

Foreign Affairs Committee of Belgium’s House of Representatives voted for the draft resolution of the Belgian Government on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide sending it for voting in the plenary session of the House of Representatives. The draft resolution recognizes and condemns the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and calls on Turkey and Armenia to seek for reconciliation.

The Armenian and Assyrian communities of Belgium had expressed their deep concern over the wording in a draft resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Belgium. The adopted resolution had been submitted by the ruling coalition. Drafts of the resolution had been submitted also by opposition parties which did not pass.

The Prime Minister of Belgium Charles Michel recognized the Armenian Genocide on behalf of his government on June 18.
