case of Perinçek for the first time ever: Gevorg Kostanyan

YEREVAN, 21 MAY, ARMENPRESS. Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan says the examination of the “Perinçek vs. Switzerland” case at the European Court of Human Rights is important in that the Armenian Genocide was discussed at the legal level for the first time ever. In response to Deputy of the National Assembly’s Heritage faction Tevan Poghosyan’s question at the National Assembly, Kostanyan mentioned that the issue of the Armenian Genocide had never become a legal topic until then. “That’s exactly the issue that is of special importance for us Armenians, taking into consideration the fact that what’s being disputed is the fact that even though the Armenian Genocide is acknowledged by the international community, it can’t be compared to the Holocaust since the Holocaust has already been legally recognized as a result of the Nuremberg Trial. This means that the issue of the Armenian Genocide has become a topic for discussion in the European Court of Human Rights in the negative sense, and this led to the emergence of the need for our intervention into the examination of the case,” Kostanyan mentioned, as “Armenpress” reports.

He recalled that Armenia hadn’t participated in the first stage of the trial on the “Perinçek vs. Switzerland” case. “In that stage, we still didn’t have the formulations and legal evaluations. Only after we had the decision of the chamber did we realize that there was no alternative to our intervention, meaning our objective was to rule out the presence of any legal document in which the Armenian Genocide would be discussed in a negative sense. And for that we put in all our efforts. I must remind that we addressed the world’s prestigious advocates who became engaged in the protection of Armenia’s interest,” Kostanyan said.
